25 years of BRS: A journey of Aspiration, Achievement and Evolution

With a new generation of leaders emerging within the party, including KT Rama Rao, the future of BRS may hinge on its ability to blend legacy with innovation, emotion with execution, and regional pride with national purpose

As the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) marks its 25th anniversary, it is a moment of reflection not only for the party but also for the people of Telangana and the broader Indian political landscape. What began in 2001 as the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) — a regional movement with a singular mission to achieve statehood for Telangana — evolved into a national political entity, symbolising the transformation of regional aspirations into national ambition.

Birth of a Movement

Founded by K Chandrashekhar Rao (KCR), TRS was born out of a deep-rooted desire to address the perceived neglect of the Telangana region in the undivided Andhra Pradesh. What set the party apart in its early days was its unwavering commitment to the cause of Telangana’s statehood. Chandrashekhar Rao’s leadership — marked by both political astuteness and emotional connect — helped the TRS transform the Telangana demand into a mass movement. The culmination came in 2014 when Telangana was officially formed, a landmark moment in India’s federal history, and a personal victory for KCR and the party.

From Regional Triumph to State Governance

Post-2014, the TRS transitioned from a protest party to a governing party. It won two consecutive terms in the newly formed State, implementing flagship schemes like Mission Bhagiratha, Rythu Bandhu and KCR Kits — programmes that aimed to address water scarcity, support farmers, and improve maternal health respectively. These welfare-oriented initiatives won admiration and, for many, symbolised a model of regional governance that was deeply rooted in local realities.

Under Chandrashekhar Rao’s stewardship, Telangana also saw significant infrastructural development and emerged as a hub for IT, industry and investment. Hyderabad, in particular, flourished into a city that balanced tradition and modernity, attracting both global capital and domestic innovation.

In 2022, the TRS was reborn as the Bharat Rashtra Samithi — an ambitious pivot signalling Chandrashekhar Rao’s intent to take the Telangana model to the national stage. While critics questioned the feasibility of such a transition, the move underscored the party’s evolving vision: from statehood to statesmanship, from regional equity to national reform. It was a bold step that challenged the conventional boundaries of regional parties in India.

However, like any political journey, BRS’ path has not been without challenges. In the 2023 Telangana Assembly elections, the party faced a stiff contest and was eventually unseated by the Congress. This marked a turning point — a moment of introspection and recalibration for the BRS. For a party that had dominated Telangana politics for nearly a decade, it was a reminder of the volatility and dynamism of democratic mandates.

Yet, resilience has always been a hallmark of K Chandrashekhar Rao and his party. The post-election period has seen efforts to revive grassroots connections, rebuild organisational strength, and realign political strategies.

Looking Ahead: The Next Chapter

As BRS completes 25 years, its legacy is undeniable. It will forever be remembered as the party that gave Telangana its identity. But the question that looms is: What next? Can BRS truly reinvent itself as a national player? Can it regain its foothold in Telangana and expand its influence beyond?
Chandrashekhar Rao, now a seasoned political statesman, has often defied the odds. With a new generation of leaders emerging within the party, including his son KT Rama Rao, the future of BRS may hinge on its ability to blend legacy with innovation, emotion with execution, and regional pride with national purpose.

The 25th anniversary of BRS is more than a celebration — it is a testament to the power of conviction, the resilience of political will, and the ever-evolving nature of democracy. From the streets of Siddipet to the corridors of Delhi, the journey of BRS has been extraordinary. As it stands at the crossroads of its future, the party carries with it the dreams of millions — and the responsibility to shape the next chapter of Indian politics with the same passion that gave birth to Telangana.
