Nearly 30 injured in magnitude 5 quake in northeast Iran

A magnitude 5.0 earthquake in Iran’s northeastern Khorasan Razavi province has rocked several cities, injuring more than two dozen people.
At least 29 people were injured, one of whom was hospitalized, after the quake hit the northeastern region at 05:10 a.m. local time, Iranian media reported on Thursday.
The media reports said that the injuries were caused by people panicking and hastily fleeing their homes.
In Torbat Heydariyeh, 23 people were injured; four people were injured in Rashtkhar, one in Gonabad, and one in Taybad.
A spokesperson for the Emergency Medical Services Organization said the monetary cost of the damage caused by the quake to buildings was insignificant.
The epicenter of the quake was put 10 km deep, near the city of Torbat Heydariyeh.
The quake was felt in the province’s capital city of Mashad as well as in neighboring countries Afghanistan and Turkmenistan.
Iran, located at the convergence of the Eurasian and Arabian tectonic plates, is a region of significant seismic activity.
The 2003 earthquake in the city of Bam stands out as one of the deadliest and most destructive in recent decades.
The earthquake, which devastated Bam and its surroundings, caused nearly 27,000 deaths.
