Mahabubabad: A 51-year-old farmer collapsed at the paddy procurement centre in Pochampally village here on Monday afternoon. A resident of Sabbiskunta thanda, G Satish had arrived at the procurement centre to sell his stocks early in the day.
As he was gearing up to sell the stocks, the farmer suddenly collapsed on the heaps of paddy. Locals said he died due to sun stroke. More details are awaited.
Meanwhile, farmers in Jogulamba Gadwal staged a protest in front of the District Collectorate office over delay in procurement of paddy.
Raising slogans against the government, the farmers unmindful of the scorching heat, squatted in front of the Collector’s office. They alleged that stocks from neighbouring Karnataka were being procured on priority and local farmers were being made to wait for their turn.
The farmers also complained that there was a severe shortage of gunny bags. Citing different reasons, about two to three kg of paddy was being deducted for every quintal while weighing the stocks and this was resulting in considerable loss, the farmers accused.
They demanded the District Collector to initiate stern action against the officials involved in these irregularities.
