KTR pays tribute to social reformer Bhagya Reddy Varma

Highlighting his contributions in the erstwhile Hyderabad State, Rama Rao recalled Bhagya Reddy Varma’s pioneering efforts in establishing 26 schools for Dalit children over a century ago, along with his unwavering fight against child marriage, the Jogini system, and various other social evils. He also noted Varma’s role during the plague epidemic and praised his work as a multilingual orator and journalist.

Hyderabad: BRS working president KT Rama Rao paid rich tributes to Bhagya Reddy Varma on his birth anniversary on Thursday, hailing him as a torchbearer of the Dalit movement and a social reformer who fought for the rights of the oppressed long before Dr BR Ambedkar.
Calling his contribution in erstwhile Hyderabad State, Rama Rao remembered Bhagya Reddy Varma’s efforts in running 26 schools for Dalit children a century ago and his relentless fight against child marriage, the Jogini system, and other social evils. He also recalled Varma’s contribution during the plague epidemic and his work as a multilingual orator and journalist.
The former Minister said the BRS government had not only officially organised Varma’s birth and death anniversaries, but also ensured his legacy was preserved by introducing his life story into the school curriculum.
He credited the Gurukul education initiative as a continuation of Varma’s vision for empowering marginalised communities through education.
