Karimnagar: The district police have registered a case after a man was caught on video sacrificing a goat by biting its neck, an act condemned as both inhuman and illegal. Sacrificing a goat or a sheep by biting it on its neck is called ‘gagu pattadam’ locally and is known to be practised in some villages to propitiate village gods and godesses.
The man, who sacrifices the goat, acts as if he is possessed and bites the sacrificial animal on its throat till it breathes its last. The gruesome ritual took place on May 21 at the Renuka Ellamma Thalli temple in Bommakal, reportedly as part of a local tradition. In the shocking footage, which surfaced on the Instagram account pradeep_famous, the man is seen killing the animal using only his teeth.
The video quickly drew outrage online and prompted animal rights activist Adulapuram Goutham to file a complaint. Responding to the complaint, police booked a case on Saturday under Sections 325 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and sections 6 and 11(1)(a)(I) of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act.
Police are trying to establish the identity of the person seen in the video and whether others were involved in the ritual.
