Nirmal: This bunch of youngsters from Yamcha village in Nizamabad district keep a watch on the Godavari river near their village and, in particular, on a bridge built across the river almost every day. Their spontaneity and brave acts have saved the lives of around 300 persons who attempted to die by suicide by jumping into the Godavari river in the last four years.

The group, comprising private employees, farmers, traders, unemployed and farm labourers from this sleepy village in Navipet mandal, is determined to prevent suicides due to various reasons, including financial crisis, family disputes and personal problems.

They are swiftly responding to attempts of suicide by the distressed and depressed people by constantly keeping a tab on the shores of the river. They have stopped many from killing themselves by jumping into the river from the top of the bridge. “Our motto is to prevent forceful deaths by anyone,” Vinod Kumar, one of the youngsters of the group.

The village, located on the banks of the river that forms a boundary between Nizamabad and Nirmal districts, saw the youngsters coming together to form a group in 2020.

To his credit, Vinod has saved the lives of 40 people in the last five years, while another member of this unique group, Mahipal, rescued 20 people. Youngsters Ramakrishna and Devender stopped 15 people each from taking their lives. Santosh, Ravinder and Sai prevented at least 10 persons each from killing themselves between 2021 and 2025.
The youngsters said that they closely watch the bridge and the movements of the people. They sometimes counsel the distressed persons and hand them over to the local police.
In recent instances, the group saved the life of a girl from Maharashtra, that of a mother of two children and also of a married woman.
