Hyderabad: The Guilford County Sheriff’s Office (GCSO) in Guilford County, North Carolina in the United States have arrested Kishan Kumar Singh (21), an international student from India on charges of trying to scam an elderly woman in Stokesdale by pretending to be a law enforcement officer.

According to media reports, the GCSO was called by the 78-year-old victim on Thursday, stating that she was getting multiple calls from people claiming to be deputies and federal agents.

The callers had threatened her saying that her name was tied to criminal activity in another part of the country, and that her bank accounts were compromised.

She was reportedly forced into withdrawing a large amount of money, under the guise that it would be given to the “federal agents” for safekeeping during their investigation and then refunded to her.

Reports said Singh was arrested when he reached the woman’s home posing as a federal agent to take the money. He was living near Cincinnati, Ohio, on a student visa since 2024, the reports said.

According to a news release from Guilford County Sheriff Danny H Rogers, Singh was arrested after he tried to scam the woman by pretending to be law enforcement.

“The victim was told her bank accounts were compromised and was pressured into withdrawing a large amount of money for ‘safekeeping’. Deputies arrested Singh when he showed up to collect the package as a ‘federal agent’. He’s now in the Guilford County Detention Center under a $1 million bond, facing felony charges, including attempt to obtaining property by false pretenses and exploitation of an elder adult,” the release said.
