Hyderabad: Cyberabad traffic police focus on weekend drunk driving

Hyderabad: The Cyberabad traffic police are now focusing on people attending weekend gatherings who then, despite being intoxicated, drive vehicles and cause fatal and non-fatal road accidents.

In April, the police conducted a special drunk driving check across Cyberabad. The police caught 1287 persons during the month and booked cases against them. The highest number of those caught were two-wheeler riders, with 1031 individuals booked for driving while intoxicated.

“The risk of two-wheeler riders falling down on roads and losing their lives is higher than that for three or four-wheeler drivers. So, the main focus is on two wheeler drivers during drunken driving checks,” a traffic police official said.

The four wheeler drivers and auto drivers are more infamous for rash driving and ramming into other commuters on the roads.

The core areas of Cyberabad such as Kukatpally, KPHB, Gachibowli, Narsingi and Raidurgam are not recording many drunk driving cases. The problem is more on the city outskirts where people are accustomed to driving while inebriated. The police officials felt it could be due to the presence of farm houses on city outskirts and late night weekend gatherings.

In April, areas such as Miyapur, Shamshabad, Medchal, RC Puram, Shadnagar and Chevella recorded a high number of cases of drunk driving.

“We are focusing on weekend special drives because there are more social gatherings and our records show on weekends more fatal and major accidents are reported,” said the police official.

The traffic police locally conduct drunk driving checking in a routine manner on all weekdays at different localities. On weekends across Cyberabad the drunk driving checking is conducted directly under supervision of the senior traffic police officials.

‘Not only we are booking cases, but also ensuring those caught for the violations are punished by the courts. In many cases people were sent to jail and driving licenses were suspended,” added the official.

Total persons booked for drunken driving – 1287

Two wheelers – 1031

Three wheelers – 53

Four wheelers – 197

Heavy vehicles – 06

Miyapur, Shamshabad, Medchal, RC Puram, Shadnagar and Chevella traffic police stations record highest number of cases.

Core areas of the city Narsingi, KPHB, Alwal, Kukatpally and Gachibowli record low cases.

Maximum number of drunk drivers caught are aged between 20 and 40 years.
