Hyderabad: The month of May in Hyderabad and other districts of Telangana State is notorious for dry heat and scorching winds and is associated with peak summer heat waves. However, this year, in terms of temperatures, it has been quite unusual, as there are no signs of the mercury crossing 40 degree Celsius in any part of Telangana State until May 15.

Based on the Hyderabad MET forecast, maximum temperatures will hover between 36 degree Celsius and 40 degree Celsius across Telangana State until May 15. Moreover, extensive thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds are also expected across Telangana State, throughout next week. This is a clear sign that there will be lesser chances for people to experience the notorious heatwaves of May this year.

Until May 15, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD)-Hyderabad has issued warnings for thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds for almost all parts of Telangana State, with the exception of a few districts.

Why is this happening?

“Thunderstorms events have increased across Telangana State this year in May. As a result, temperatures have gone down considerably. Usually, heat waves are associated with May but due to heavy thunderstorm activity, the maximum temperatures have decreased. Evening and night temperatures are also falling,” says Head, IMD-Hyderabad, Dr K Nagaratna.

Some of the districts where thunderstorms warning have been issued include Adilabad, KomaramBheem Asifabad, Mancherial, Nirmal, Nizamabad, Karimnagar, Peddapalli, Jayashankar Bhupalapally, Mulugu, Bhadradri Kothagudem, Khammam, Nalgonda, Suryapet, Mahabubabad, Warangal, Hanamkonda, Jangaon, Siddipet, Yadadri Bhuvangiri, Rangareddy, Hyderabad, Medchal Malkajgiri, Vikarabad, Mahabubnagar, Nagarkurnool, Wanaparthy and Jogulamba Gadwal.
