New rock art site believed to be of medieval period discovered in Mahabubnagar

Hyderabad: A new rock art site believed to be from the medieval period has recently been discovered by a Kotha Telangana Charitra Brundam member in Mahabubnagar.

According to a press release issued here on Tuesday, Kavali Chandrakanth, a member of the Kotha Telangana Charitra Brundam, has identified a new rock art site on Peddagutta in Jeenugarala village, Devarakadra Mandal, Mahbubnagar District, located at coordinates 16°34’51” N latitude and 77°52’31” E longitude.

These rock paintings, created in red pigment, depict a chariot-like structure when viewed from bottom to top. The red lines show a human figure at the bottom, a turtle appearing in a square shape above, and vertical lines resembling a ladder nearby.

Historians and rock art experts from the team, Bandi Muralidhar Reddy and Sriramoju Haragopal, opine that these paintings belong to the historical period, specifically the medieval era.

The artwork appears as if one figure is drawn within another, suggesting it may have been a place of worship for a specific local community. The surrounding area of the rock art site contains traces of ancient human burials and settlements.

Chandrakanth believes that a thorough investigation could reveal more about prehistoric cultures, the press release added.
