Nirmal: Paddy stored at government-run procurement centres was soaked in the unseasonal rains that occurred in different parts of the district early on Wednesday morning.

Farmers had shifted the harvested paddy to procurement centres to sell it to the government in Khanapur, Mudhole and Nirmal Assembly segments.

The produce was damaged due to insufficient tarpaulin covers at the centres, causing losses to the growers. Farmers in several villages of Khanapur segment are learnt to have suffered damage to the crop by the rains.

The farmers requested the government to extend immediate relief by carrying out a survey of crop damage. They said that the unseasonal rains dashed their hopes of registering profits by growing the paddy crop in the Yasangi season.

They recalled that they had already recorded losses in cultivating the crop in Vanakalam season due to unfavorable climatic conditions.
