Hyderabad: An auto-rickshaw driver died after allegedly being thrashed by the Rajendranagar police on Tuesday night.
Mohd Irfan (35), a resident of Gandipet, was reportedly summoned to the police station following a complaint made by his wife Nishad Begum alleging he was maintaining an illicit relationship with another woman.
Around 7.30 pm, Irfan went to the police station and was inside till 10.30 pm. His brother, Mohd Sadiq, alleged Irfan was beaten up in the police station. Speaking to media persons at Osmania General Hospital, Sadiq said, “In the police station, my brother’s wife asked the policemen to beat him. On her directions, the police beat my brother with rubber belts. On hearing his cries, we rushed into the building but the police stopped us at the door and did not allow us.”
An hour later, Irfan reportedly came out of the police station and started vomiting and collapsed on the ground. “We rushed him to a hospital where doctors pronounced him dead,” said Sadiq.
Following the incident, the police reportedly took a complaint from Nishad Begum stating that Irfan was maintaining a relationship with another woman and the trouble started due to it.
The Rajendranagar police registered a case under Section 194 of BNNS Act and are investigating. The police officials were not available for their comments.
