Hyderabad: The Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR) Hyderabad conducted its annual outreach event on the occasion of the International Day of Light here on Friday.
Commemorating the first successful demonstration of a laser by researcher Theodore Maiman in 1960, the event hosted around 120 visitors for a day of light-themed demonstrations and experiments and an opportunity to engage with laser research and researchers at TIFR Hyderabad.
TIFR -Hyderabad students curated a line-up of physics experiments, including demonstrations on how a silicon-based solar panel works, observations with a plasma ball, a sealed glass sphere filled with low-pressure inert gases (typically neon and argon) and containing a central high-voltage electrode.
Students from IIT Hyderabad showcased a device that enables one to visualise veins in the human body using infrared cameras and AI modelling. Visitors also observed the workings of drones and their role in a diverse range of applications. Other devices presented included Light Distance Meter, Kaleidoscope, light fountain, and polarizers.
Centre Director Prof. M. Krishnamurthy discussed the research activities that were in progress.
