Telangana retains existing age criteria for Class I admissions

State opts for five plus age rule for 2025-26, despite Centre’s push for six plus guideline

Hyderabad: There is no change in the age criterion for admissions to Class I in the schools across the State.

While the Central government had previously directed the State/UT governments to align their age of admission for Class I to six plus years, the Telangana government decided to continue the existing age criteria of five plus years for the academic year 2025-26 as well.

School Education Department Director EV Narasimha Reddy, in a proceeding detailing ‘Badi Bata’ (admission drive) in government and local body schools for academic year 2025-26, directed schools and officials to enrol eligible Anganwadi children and five plus age group children into nearby primary schools in Class I.

So far, some private schools, particularly the ones affiliated to the CBSE, other international boards, aligned with the Central government’s directive and admitted six plus aged kids in Class I.

Prior to commencement of ‘Badi Bata’ on June 6, schools have been tasked to interact with self-help groups, Amma Adarsha Patashala Committee members, Anganwadi teachers and mothers committees, youth and local leaders for ensuring smooth admission process and transition in the government schools.

Teachers have also been asked to inform parents about AI integrated learning platforms with personalised content focusing on Telugu and English reading, and Mathematical skills.
