Hyderabad Gulzar Houz fire tragedy: Residents join firefighting, rescue ops

Rescue ops under way at Gulzar Houz in Hyderabad on Sunday.
Hyderabad: Soon after the fire started to rage at Gulzar Houz, the local people rushed in and joined the rescue and firefighting efforts at the ill-fated building.
Being a Sunday, youngsters from localities around Charminar gather at Nimrah Cafe to have ‘chai’ and chit-chat.
“On noticing smoke from the Gulzar Houz side, I along with my friends rushed to the place. Meanwhile, fire tenders started rushing. The least we could do is clear the public and make way for the fire tenders. We helped them with taking out the pipes and ladders from the fire tender,” said Mohd Shafiuddin, a resident of Khilwat.
As the news spread, more youngsters from surroundings such as Alijah Kotla, Kali Kaman, Laad Bazaar and Panch Mohalla rushed to the spot. A few of them climbed on the adjacent buildings and assisted the firemen in pulling up the water pipes and ladders.
Rayeezuddin, a businessman from Alijah Kotla, said, “We climbed the ladder and reached the top of an adjacent building and helped in the rescue of some people.”
On roads the Good Samaritans were seen making way for ambulances, pulling down the stretches and rushing to the mishap site to bring in the injured. A few donned the role of traffic police and were seen clearing way for fire tenders and ambulances that sped to the spot.
