US Navy fighter jet falls into sea as aircraft carrier tries to evade Yemeni attack

The United States Navy says it has lost a fighter jet at sea after the USS Harry S. Truman aircraft carrier made a hard turn to evade an attack by Yemeni Armed Forces in the Red Sea.

The US Navy said in a statement on Monday that an F/A-18E Super Hornet, worth $67.4 million, fell overboard from the aircraft carrier into the Red Sea while it was being towed on board.

The F/A-18E Super Hornet “was actively under tow in the hangar bay when the move crew lost control of the aircraft,” the Navy statement said.

One sailor suffered a minor injury, but the carrier strike group and its air wing remain “fully mission capable,” it added.

A US official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, also confirmed the loss of the fighter jet, while speaking to The Washington Post.

The latest development came after Yemen’s Ansarullah movement said a US missile strike on Sa’ada governorate’s detention center in the Arab country has left nearly 70 African migrants dead and injured dozens more.

The United States, itself, has admitted to striking over 800 targets across Yemen since mid-March under its so-called Operation Rough Rider, authorized by President Donald Trump to deal “overwhelming lethal force” to the country.

The operation, which markedly intensified the US aggression against Yemen, went underway as part of Washington’s efforts to stop Yemeni Armed Forces’ strikes against Israeli targets.

In reaction to the atrocities committed by Israel in Gaza and the aggression of the US and UK against Yemen, the Yemeni Armed Forces have initiated a series of strikes aimed at Israeli, American, and British interests in the Red Sea and adjacent regions.

As the war on Gaza escalated, the Yemenis enacted a strategic blockade on essential maritime routes, with the goal of obstructing the delivery of military supplies to Israel and urging the international community to take action regarding the ongoing humanitarian emergency in Gaza.

The Yemeni Armed Forces have declared they will continue their assaults until Israel ceases its campaign of genocide in Gaza.
