Iran calls for regional unity on Persian Gulf Day

As Iran marks the National Persian Gulf Day, the Foreign Ministry has placed a premium on unity and coexistence among the regional countries.

“The National Day of the Persian Gulf is a historical observance that is imprinted on the identity of Iran and the memory of the region, and is a symbol of coexistence, interaction, and civilization-building throughout history,” Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei said in a post on social media platform X on Wednesday.

The spokesman added that the Persian Gulf Day is “an opportunity to revisit the common history of the region’s peoples, reflect on the elements that make up the regional identity, and emphasize the need to further promote convergence and good neighborliness among the regional nations to achieve endogenous security and sustainable development for all countries in West Asia.”

Every year, Iranians observe the Persian Gulf Day on the 10th of Ordibehesht, the second month on the Persian calendar, which usually falls on April 30.

The date coincides with the anniversary of a successful military campaign by Shah Abbas I of Persia in 1622, which drove the Portuguese navy out of the Strait of Hormuz.

While historical documents show that the waterway has always been referred to as the “Persian Gulf,” certain Arab states and their allies have frequently used the fictitious name “the Arabian Gulf” to point to the body of water.
