Preparations underway for Putin's visit to Tehran: Iran govt. spox

The Iranian government spokesperson says arrangements are being made for a visit by Russian President Vladimir Putin to Tehran, as the two strategic allies seek to enhance cooperation in various fields.

Fatemeh Mohajerani made the announcement amid media speculation about Putin’s trip to Iran with the aim of boosting Moscow-Tehran ties and exchanging views on global developments.

“The trip is under consideration, but the details, including the exact time and schedule, will be announced soon by the Foreign Ministry,” Mohajerani said.

The spokeswoman stressed that Iran-Russia relations are on the path of development and consolidation, and such trips are made with the aim of enhancing bilateral cooperation and discussing regional and international issues.

“The Foreign Ministry is responsible for the final coordination and official announcement of the trip, and any official news must be released by that ministry. The media and the public should await the final statement from the ministry,” she added.

Mohajerani was also quoted by Russia’s state RIA news agency as saying on Monday that “Putin’s trip to Tehran is currently being worked out, preparations are underway.”

The Kremlin has yet to announce plans for Russian president’s visit to Iran.

‘Win-win situation’

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov lauded as positive the results of the Iran-Russia Joint Economic Cooperation Committee, which was recently held in Moscow, and said the development of Moscow-Tehran relations is a “win-win situation.”

“We evaluate the results of the work of the Joint Economic Cooperation Committee of the two countries as positive,” Peskov said in response to a question by IRNA. “We consider relations with Iran to be built on partnership and beneficial for both sides.”

The Kremlin spokesman also underlined that the current volume of trade turnover between the two countries is by no means commensurate with the capacities of the two countries.

Earlier in the month, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi handed over a message from Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei to Putin during a meeting in Moscow.

The visit took place at the invitation of Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, and within the framework of continuous consultations between the two countries.

Iran and Russia, as two close and strategic allies, have over the past years deepened relations in various fields, despite heavy Western sanctions.

The Russian leader signed a bill in April, ratifying the strategic partnership treaty with Iran, which had been inked in January.

The pact has a duration of twenty years and establishes the legal framework for long-term cooperation in various sectors, including defense, energy, industry, agriculture, finance, transportation, science, culture, and technology.

The long-term agreement seeks to promote investments in oil, gas, and the development of peaceful nuclear energy. It also aims to establish an international payment system that is independent of third-party countries and operates using national currencies.
